About Stephen Rutherford
I have been painting in watercolor for 30 years. I studied at the Academy of Art College in San Francisco. After graduating in 1984, I moved to New York City, and worked as a freelance illustrator. I produced drawings and paintings for magazines, design firms, and advertising agencies. I worked in acrylic at the time, and my paintings appeared in such magazines as Food & Wine and Travel & Leisure.
In the early 1990's I switched careers to computer science and created medical education software for Cornell University in New York. I am currently a principal software engineer for Oracle's Healthcare and AI group.
Today, I paint for myself, and for my loyal clients. My work is influenced by such artists as Thomas Eakins, Winslow Homer, and Andrew Wyeth.
I love to paint in watercolor -- it is fresh and immediate. The color, texture, and transparency of watercolor inspires me. It is one the oldest media, and yet still relevant today.
I live with my wife Rika, and daughters Brielle and Serena, in the western suburbs of Philadelphia.
